Scenarios That Might Require a Reverse License Plate Search
There are several situations where searching for a license plate becomes necessary:
- When the VIN isn’t available, the license plate number can help identify the vehicle and retrieve missing information.
- For pre-purchase due diligence, especially when buying a used vehicle from a private seller or online listing.
- To obtain detailed vehicle records, service history, active recalls and accident history, or to check if it was ever reported stolen.
- To check if a vanity or personalized license plate is available for registration.
- To check for an odometer rollback or if the vehicle carries a salvage title.
- Towing or insurance companies may need to identify the owner of an abandoned or damaged vehicle.
Typically, What Data Can You Find With a License Plate Search?
A license plate search can reveal detailed information about the vehicle and, in some cases, the owner. Some information may be restricted depending on who is searching and for what reason. In general, you can expect to find the following:
- Vehicle technical specifications including make, model, color, year, engine capacity, safety rating and features.
- Fuel efficiency, active recalls and remaining warranty.
- A generated vehicle sketch or reference image.
- Service history, lien records, title history, salvage or total-loss history.
- Sale records and estimated market value.
To obtain personally identifiable information (PII) such as the vehicle owner’s name or address, a valid, DPPA-compliant reason is required — see below for details.

Can Anyone Look Up a License Plate?
Yes — it’s perfectly legal to run someone’s license plate, provided you have a valid reason as defined by the federal Driver’s Privacy Protection Act (DPPA). The DPPA regulates the sharing of personally identifiable vehicle-owner data, such as name, address, photo and phone number, without a legitimate reason.
As per the DPPA, permissible uses include:
- For motor vehicle or driver safety and theft
- By a government agency
- For litigation or pre-litigation purposes
- For debt recovery
- For insurer and claim investigation
- By a licensed private investigator or agency
- For employment verification
- By a consumer reporting authority
- Others; permissible uses vary from state to state
Why Should You Report Bad Drivers?
- American roads had 237,655,885 licensed drivers and 284,614,269 registered vehicles.
- A staggering 96% of drivers admit to engaging in aggressive driving behavior.
- More than 58% of American drivers admit to behavior consistent with road rage.
- There were 6,138,359 police-reported vehicle crashes, 40,901 fatalities, and nearly 2.44 million Americans injured.
- One person is killed every 12.8 minutes, and about five people are injured every minute in traffic-related incidents.
- 41 million Americans received traffic citations.
Clearly, American roads are seeing an increasing number of reckless drivers. When you encounter someone driving dangerously, you can make a difference by reporting the plate on our website. Publicly documenting the incident may be exactly what it takes to deter that driver from doing it again.
